We recently sat down with four interns to hear about the lessons they learned and the lasting impressions they’ll take away from their time at Point72.

Tell me a little about your background and what your role is at the firm?

Maitri: I’m from Calgary, Canada, and came to the U.S. for college, studying computer science at Harvard. I work as a Data Research Intern in Market Intelligence, where I analyze alternative data sets to uncover insights about the companies we cover.

Camille: I’m originally from New York City, but I moved to a small three-street town in Scotland to attend the University of St. Andrew’s, where I study international relations. This summer I’m working with Point72 Ventures.

Matt: I was born and raised in Tokyo, and I’m currently a rising senior at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, studying Finance and Business Analytics. This summer, I’m excited to be interning with the Point72 Academy in the Tokyo office.

Ritwik: I’m from India, where I did my undergrad before starting my PhD in statistics at Harvard. My research there focuses on model free hypothesis testing and working with data in high-dimensional settings. I’m a Quantitative Research Intern with Cubist Quant Academy.

What brought you to Point72 this summer?

Maitri: This is actually my second summer at Point72! Last year, I was a Treasury Intern, which helped me learn about the finance industry, both how we operate internally and within the broader financial ecosystem. I later learned more about the Market Intelligence team, where I can combine my data background with my interest in markets. I loved the culture, so I was excited to return this summer.

Camille: I joined Point72 this summer for the chance to work on different parts of the business. I’ve been supporting pipeline opportunities through data analytics, addressing process challenges, and helping with deal sourcing. It’s been a great way to use my skills and learn how the firm operates.

Matt: One thing that drew me to Point72 this summer was the Academy’s unique combination of academic learning and hands-on experience. The opportunity to gain technical skills while working on real investment projects with a team of experienced professionals really stood out to me.

Ritwik: My work mainly involves extracting signals from data. I was drawn to Point72 because of its focus on leveraging data and quantitative methods to drive investment decisions, which aligns closely with my academic background and interests.

What’s been the most rewarding part of your internship experience at Point72?

Maitri: The most rewarding part of my experience has been the ability to take ownership of a project from start to finish. I’m tasked with analyzing a specific industry or company and start by conducting fundamental research, working with various data sets, and exploring creative ideas that I believe could add value. The support I receive from my manager and entire team, coupled with the chance to present my insights, makes the entire process fulfilling.

Camille: The most rewarding part has been the level of exposure I was given throughout deal processes. I’ve also really enjoyed the collaborative culture and how people are receptive to new ideas. Each day, I see Partners, VPs, and Associates all working together to problem solve by actively seeking feedback from one another and exchanging ideas.

Matt: A highlight of my internship was working on my PM project during rotations. I analyzed the fundamentals of an auto parts supplier and how its relationship with other companies in the supplier network exposed it to external, non-operational risks. Delivering a pitch that combined fundamental and event-driven analysis was an incredibly rewarding experience, especially as it was a type of pitch I had never done before.

Ritwik: Meeting people from different backgrounds and working together on the same problems has been a great experience. It’s been interesting to learn about their approaches and projects, which has helped me broaden my own perspective and problem-solving skills.

Are there any specific skills or lessons you’ve gained here that you think will help you in your career?

Maitri: As part of the internship, we rotate between two different sectors. I quickly realized just how much information is out there and the importance of determining what truly matters. For example, when analyzing my first company, I went through a lot of research and it was challenging to narrow down the key insights, but by the second, I learned to efficiently identify and focus my time on the most critical areas. The experience has helped me develop my ability to effectively analyze, synthesize, and prioritize information.

Camille: I’ve learned to embrace the iterative process, starting with a rough draft, whether it’s a report, deck, or analysis, and refining it with feedback from the team. It’s taught me to work more efficiently, be open to new ideas, and focus on improving every step of the way.

Matt: I’ve learned to be more comfortable with uncertainty. The analyst I worked with really stressed the importance of thinking carefully through assumptions and being confident in my approach – even when some information just isn’t available – which has changed how I approach analyzing companies.

Ritwik: Coming here was my first real experience with real-world data sets, and it’s been enlightening to apply the methods and theories I’ve learned over the years to practical problems. Talking to team members with different perspectives has also been really valuable in showing me new ways of approaching the same problem.

If you could give one piece of advice to future interns, what would it be?

Maitri: Be open to everything. Do the tasks you’re given, but also seek out opportunities to learn from others, whether it’s within your department or from different teams. Everyone here is open to answering questions and eager to help.

Camille: One piece of advice I’d give is to come in every day with a positive mindset and a willingness to take constructive feedback. No one expects you to be perfect on day one, but growth happens when you stay curious, ask thoughtful questions, and remain open to learning.

Matt: Make the most of the supportive environment, ask questions and don’t be afraid to seek guidance. Every conversation is an opportunity to learn, and taking bits and pieces from everyone you talk to can be incredibly helpful. Being in a culture where you can approach anyone, especially when you’re unsure about something, is reassuring.

Ritwik: I think the key is to stay curious, there’s so much to learn. Interact with as many people as you can; everyone I’ve met here has been friendly and willing to help and answer questions. Just take the initiative and make the most of it.

What’s an interesting fact about you that you’d like to share?

Maitri: I live an hour from the Rocky Mountains and love hiking there.

Camille: I’m a huge tennis fan and a proud supporter of Jannik Sinner.

Matt: This past year, I traveled to Peru. We spent a few days in Lima, flew to Cusco, and then took a train to Machu Picchu. It was a packed schedule, but it was so much fun!

Ritwik: I was once ranked within the top hundred people in an online game called Generals.
