1992

Steven A. Cohen founds SAC Capital

After starting his investing career at the brokerage firm Gruntal & Co., Steve Cohen founds SAC Capital with $20 million of AUM, based in New York.

1994

Firm begins investing using quantitative strategies

With the hiring of our first quantitative PM, the firm begins applying quantitative strategies to investing. In 2003, the systematic business expands into what is now Cubist Systematic Strategies.

1996

Firm establishes headquarters in Stamford

The firm establishes headquarters in Stamford, CT. In 2002, SAC moves to 72 Cummings Point Road in Stamford overlooking the Long Island Sound, a campus setting where the business is still located today.

2003

Firm launches Global Macro strategy

January 2006

Firm expands to Europe

The firm opens its first international office in London, reflecting the evolution to a global business. Our European expansion continued with the opening of offices in Paris (2017) and Warsaw (2020).  

November 2006

Firm expands to the Asia-Pacific region

The firm opens an office in Hong Kong, which becomes the center of a durable and ever-growing presence in the Asia-Pacific region. We continued to grow in Hong Kong through the global financial crisis, and subsequently expanded into Singapore (2009), Tokyo (2011), Sydney (2018), and Taipei (2019) 

2010

Cohen family office launches

Steve Cohen establishes Cohen Private Ventures to manage his personal and family investment activities.  

2012

Firm begins program for emerging managers, known today as Point72 LaunchPoint 

November 2013

SAC Capital transitions to family office 

Steve Cohen settles regulatory matters and transitions to Point72 as a family office exclusively managing the assets of Steve Cohen, his family, and eligible employees.

April 7, 2014

Point72 Asset Management founded

The firm formally adopts the name Point72 Asset Management and affirms its commitment to ethics and integrity by developing a Mission and Values statement and building a best-in-class Compliance program.

December 2014

Firm forms Community Matters, as philanthropic arm of Point72

August 2015

Point72 Academy launches with inaugural class

The firm launches the Point72 Academy to train undergraduates as fundamental long/short investment analysts. The Academy has since expanded globally and now includes programs for sector specialists, candidates from nontraditional backgrounds, and earlycareer professionals.

Steve Cohen resolves administrative case with SEC

 

Point72 Founder Steve Cohen resolves administrative proceeding with the SEC.

April 2016

Point72 Ventures launches

Point72 Ventures, a global venture capital strategy funded exclusively by Steve Cohen and eligible employees of Point72, launches focused on investing in fintech startups. The business expands, first into themes of artificial intelligence and machine learning investments (2017) followed by enterprise investments (2018). 

January 1, 2018

Stamford Harbor Capital and Point72 merge to become Point72, a Registered Investment Advisor with the SEC

Point72 begins accepting outside capital in February and raises $5.76 billion over the course of 2018.

April 2018

Point72 establishes Office of Inclusion and Engagement

Point72 names Jeanne Melino as the firm’s Chief Inclusion and Engagement Officer, responsible for strengthening firm culture and promoting a more diverse and inclusive workforce.  

November 2019

Point72 publishes its first Environmental, Social, and Governance Report to stakeholders

2020

Point72 Academy places 100th Academy graduate on L/S teams

By 2020, Academy graduates made up more than one-third of analysts in our long/short equity business. Since launching, the Academy emerges as a key source of diverse talent and Academy grads represent more than half of the women in our long/short business.

Point72 surpasses $20 billion in AUM

March 2021

Point72 Private Investments is established

The firm establishes Point72 Private Investments as the new holding company for its growing institutional private investing activities, which include Point72 Ventures, a multi-stage venture capital strategy led by a diverse set of domain experts, and the firm’s growth strategy.

February 2022

The Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation celebrates $1 billion in giving

Steve and Alex’s charitable gifts now exceed $1 billion across underserved communities, children, the arts, sustainability, and psychedelic health research.

June 2022

Firm celebrates 30 years of innovation

After launching with one strategy and ~$20 million in AUM in 1992, by June 2022 the firm had grown to more than 1,800 employees across 18 global offices managing more than $24 billion.

July 2023

Point72 surpasses $30 billion in AUM
